Forest fires and emergency responses in Spain
Overview
Forest fires in Spain have prompted significant emergency responses in the regions of La Rioja and Galicia.
In La Rioja, authorities activated Level 1 of the Special Civil Protection Emergency Plan following a blaze in the La Irruz area of Villoslada de Cameros. High winds complicated extinction efforts, which utilized helicopters, cargo planes, and ground units. In response to such risks, the regional government has also implemented pilot training programs like the ‘Active Towns against Forest Fires’ initiative to improve municipal organization and resident self-protection.
In Ourense, a major fire in Calvos de Randín burned approximately 140 hectares. Due to the fire’s proximity to the As Meaus residential area, authorities declared Situation 2 as a preventive measure. The blaze spread through terrain described as having “very difficult access,” leading to a massive deployment of 17 brigades and multiple aircraft from both regional and national ministries.
