Forest fires and haze in Central Kalimantan
Overview
In late July 2026, forest and land fires in Tumbang Nusa, Pulang Pisau Regency, caused dense haze to envelop Palangka Raya, the capital of Central Kalimantan. Authorities reported 109 hotspots covering approximately 54.44 hectares, with peat fires proving particularly difficult to extinguish. The resulting smoke reduced visibility on major roads and affected four city districts.
By late August, the Palangka Raya City Government intensified health measures to address a rise in Acute Respiratory Infection (ISPA) cases linked to the poor air quality. To mitigate these health risks, the government prepared oxygen rooms across 11 community health centers, with four facilities designated to provide 24-hour emergency services. Local officials also began distributing masks to residents and schools while advising citizens to minimize outdoor activities.
