Formula 1 engine component penalty concerns
Overview
Formula 1 drivers are facing uncertainty regarding potential grid penalties due to engine component usage.
Lewis Hamilton expressed uncertainty about facing penalties for the remainder of the season, noting that a recent retirement in Madrid resulted in lower mileage on his available components. While he did not foresee needing a penalty immediately, he acknowledged that engine performance degrades over time. Similarly, Ferrari is monitoring Charles Leclerc’s situation regarding his power unit from the Italian Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing are also navigating potential penalties following power unit issues during qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. While the team managed to avoid an immediate penalty by swapping components, Verstappen stated that a penalty is “inevitable.” Because Verstappen has reached the regulatory limit for internal combustion engines, turbochargers, and exhaust systems, any additional units required will trigger an automatic grid penalty.
Following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing secured a double podium, with Verstappen finishing second and rookie Isack Hadjar taking third. This result marks the team’s first double podium in nearly two and a half years. Despite the success, Team Principal Laurent Mekies stated that the team is still analyzing the situation to determine if the Baku engine can be salvaged. The race also prompted debate regarding team orders, as Mekies defended the decision to prevent Hadjar from overtaking Verstappen, stating the team focused on maximizing the overall result.
