The Formula 1 Commission has approved several significant regulatory changes for the 2027 season, primarily aimed at accommodating new power unit specifications. A key decision is the reduction of Grand Prix race distances from 305 kilometers to 290 kilometers. This change, which will result in races being approximately two to three laps shorter, is intended to manage increased fuel flow requirements without necessitating expensive chassis redesigns to accommodate larger fuel tanks. Specifically, the FIA will increase fuel flow by 5 percent to increase the role of internal combustion engines and reduce reliance on electrical components. The 2027 regulations will also feature a rebalancing of power between the internal combustion engine (ICE) and electrical components. The ICE output is expected to increase to 420kW, while the maximum power from the MGU-K will be reduced to 300kW (excluding overtake mode). This shift aims for a power balance of approximately 58% internal combustion and 42% electric, with a projected shift toward a 60/40 split by 2028. Recent developments confirm that the distance reduction is temporary, with the 305-kilometer standard expected to return in 2028. To address budget cap loopholes, new 2027 operational regulations will mandate strict physical and digital segregation between F1 projects and a team’s other business activities, such as Formula E. E, WEC, or sailing. This includes the separation of staff, simulators, and data centers, with a required one-year waiting period for personnel moving between divisions. Additional sporting changes include the removal of the three-hour total time limit for races interrupted by weather, replaced by a fixed end time for racing activities. The Commission has also agreed to scrap gearbox homologation for 2027.
