Fortescue electrification and decarbonization initiatives

Fortescue has expanded its electrification and decarbonization initiatives through industrial milestones and new ventures in high-performance technology.

In Western Australia, the company reached a milestone in its Green Metal Project by producing its first hot metal using an electric smelting process at the Christmas Creek hub. This project utilizes an electric smelting furnace to feed direct reduced iron into the process, aiming to create a low-emission or zero-carbon metal feed for steel mills. The facility is part of Fortescue’s broader goal to reach ‘real zero’ emissions at its Pilbara operations by 2030.

Furthering its focus on electrification, Fortescue announced plans to enter the Formula E World Championship by acquiring the Penske Autosport operation, specifically identified as DS Penske. Operating through its electrification arm, Fortescue Zero, the company intends to run a customer outfit using Jaguar’s Gen4 powertrain architecture. If approved by the FIA and Formula E promoters, Fortescue would become the first Australian-owned team in the series, aiming to compete as early as the 2026/27 season.

This move marks a transition for the company from a technical supplier and official PIT BOOST partner to a full racing entrant. Executives, including Gus Pichot, CEO of Fortescue Growth and Energy, stated that the team intends to use high-performance racing as an industrial incubator to develop and test technologies that can be applied to heavy industry and commercial electric vehicles to assist in decarbonization efforts.
