Franca designation as Brazil basketball capital

Overview

The municipality of Franca, São Paulo, has been officially designated as the ‘National Basketball Capital of Brazil’ following the publication of Law 15.514. The legislation recognizes the city’s historical ties to the sport since the 1940s and its role in producing athletes, coaches, and referees, as well as its economic and cultural impact through sports tourism.

Building on this recognition, Franca hosted the first stage of a national free basketball coach training project. Led by the Instituto Basquete Brasil (IBB) and the Confederação Brasileira de Basketball (CBB), the initiative provided technical training and professional qualification for coaches to help democratize sports education in Brazil.
