France driving license suspension regulations

Overview

In response to rising road fatalities and phone-related infractions, French authorities have expanded administrative penalties for distracted driving.

Initially, the Vienne department implemented an experimental measure effective October 1, 2026. This policy targeted novice drivers and repeat offenders with an immediate one-month license suspension for holding a mobile phone or using an audio device held to the ear. This measure was prompted by a 55% increase in phone-related infractions in the department compared to 2021.

Following these local efforts, the French government announced the nationwide generalization of temporary driving license suspensions. Under the Ministry of the Interior’s new directive, the act of holding a phone while driving can trigger a suspension ranging from 15 days to six months, as determined by local prefectures. These sanctions are applied alongside existing fines and point deductions. Minister Delegate for Citizenship Marie-Pierre Vedrenne stated the objective is to “make the danger of phone use clear to all citizens.”
