France-Iran diplomatic tensions over language center closure

Overview

Iranian authorities closed the Centre de langue française (CLF) in Tehran, an institution affiliated with the French embassy that has operated for over 20 years. Following an order from the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office, security forces raided the center.

Iranian officials accused the facility of using its status as a language training center to conduct activities against national security and Iranian-Islamic culture. Specifically, the judiciary alleged the center sought to build networks to facilitate the departure of Iranian elites from the country. No public evidence has been provided to support these claims.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or Quai d’Orsay, condemned the closure as “unjustifiable and unacceptable.” In response, the French government announced it would summon Iran’s ambassador in Paris and take “appropriate measures.” This incident follows previous diplomatic friction between the two nations, including the arrest and expulsion of two French diplomats in July.
