Fraud targeting farmers in Pahang
Overview
Agricultural workers in Pahang, Malaysia, have been targeted by distinct fraudulent schemes resulting in significant financial losses.
In one instance, a farmer in Cameron Highlands lost over RM1.15 million to a love scam. The perpetrator, posing as a cybersecurity director, used WhatsApp to lure the victim into a gold investment scheme and a platform called ‘Veniec Lottery’. The victim transferred funds across seven bank accounts before the fraud was discovered.
In a separate incident, a durian farmer in Maran lost RM202,460 to a lottery scam initiated via Facebook advertisements. The victim was misled by claims that purchasing lottery tickets could alter her fortune, subsequently paying various fees to facilitate promised winnings. Both cases are under investigation by Pahang police under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
