Commemorations for Freddie Mercury’s 80th birthday on September 5 include various public tributes and exhibitions. To mark the anniversary, a nine-meter-tall anamorphic mural titled ‘I’m Mr Mercury’ has been unveiled at Wembley Park’s Spanish Steps in London. Created by artist Frank Styles, the artwork spans 58 steps connecting Wembley Stadium and the OVO Arena, designed to resolve into a clear portrait of Mercury only when viewed from a specific marked point. The piece incorporates personal symbols such as koi carp, representing his love for Japan, and winged female figures reflecting his Virgo zodiac sign and the Queen band crest. On the day of his 80th birthday, thousands of fans and music enthusiasts gathered in Montreux, Switzerland, to pay tribute at his bronze statue with flowers, balloons, and music. Many supporters arrived in flamboyant costumes reflecting Mercury’s iconic stage presence, congregating near the statue overlooking Lake Geneva to sing and honor his musical legacy. During the festivities, Mercury’s sister, Kashmira Bulsara, joined the commemorations and appeared on stage to cut a commemorative cake. Montreux ~~was~~ remains a significant location where Mercury spent his final years and recorded much of his later work at Mountain Studios, which now serves as a Queen exhibition space. Further tributes include the release of ‘A Life in Lyrics’ by Mary Austin, which offers a personal look at his life through handwritten lyrics and previously unseen images. The Victoria and Albert Museum has also announced a free exhibition titled ‘Freddie Mercury | Splendid Things’, running from October 24, 2026, to January 17, 2027. Developed with Mary Austin, the display will showcase eight iconic looks from the 1970s and 1980s, including the monochromatic ensemble from the band’s 1973 debut album cover and the ‘Mercury Wing’ bodysuit. Further tributes include the release of ‘A Life in Lyrics’ by Mary Austin. Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town, Zanzibar, moved to England in 1964 following the Zanzibar revolution. He rose to global stardom with ~~Queen, known for hits such as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘We Are the Champions’,~~ Queen before passing away in 1991.
