Freddie Mercury exhibition at Victoria and Albert Museum
Overview
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Freddie Mercury’s birth, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London launched a free exhibition titled ‘Splendid Things’. The exhibition is structured as a trail across six museum galleries rather than a single room.
Developed with support from Mary Austin, Mercury’s former fiancée and close friend, the display features iconic costumes and accessories from the 1970s and 1980s. On loan from Austin’s private collection are seven outfits, including the monochrome ensemble from Queen’s 1973 debut album cover, the ‘Mercury Wing’ catsuit used during the ‘A Night at the Opera’ tour and the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ music video, and the signature crown and cloak from the 1986 Magic Tour.
Senior curator Kate Bailey stated that the exhibition aims to reflect Mercury’s multi-disciplinary creativity and his passion for art, design, and fashion. The museum expressed interest in acquiring further Queen-related items to celebrate the band’s cultural impact.
