Free HPV vaccination expansions

Entities: Antonio Lacerenza · Italian Ministry of Health · Stefania Proietti · Umbria Region · ASL Foggia

Overview

In July 2026, several Brazilian municipalities announced that they would continue offering the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine free of charge to teenagers through the end of the year, extending the existing public‑health programme.

A month later, Italian regional authorities reported broader extensions of their free HPV vaccination scheme. In Apulia’s Foggia province, officials widened eligibility to individuals aged 11‑26 and introduced mobile vaccination units, including a camper, to reach migrants and remote communities. The Umbria regional council approved free vaccination for boys born in 2005, a group previously excluded, and allocated up to €500,000 to local health units to promote the programme and integrate it with cervical‑cancer screening services.

Both developments reflect a trend of sub‑national governments expanding publicly funded HPV immunisation to larger age groups and underserved populations.
