French blood donation shortages

Overview

Late July 2026 saw the French Blood Service (EFS) intensify summer outreach as vacations and heat waves strained regional blood reserves. Mobile collections were deployed in the Basque Country, Pays de la Loire, Île‑de‑France and Normandy, with drives in towns such as Ciboure, Ascain, Hendaye, Nantes, Angers, Le Mans, Lieusaint and Gisors targeting donors aged 18‑70.

In parallel, the newly opened Maison du don in Aubagne, inaugurated in March 2026, recorded over 1,000 donors within its first months, including 69 first‑time blood donors and 241 new plasma donors, advancing the national goal of plasma self‑sufficiency. The EFS and the Association Don du sang also announced a further collection event for 5 August 2026 in Saint‑Marcel (Eure), inviting eligible residents to donate.

These combined efforts aim to sustain emergency trauma care, surgical oncology, chronic‑disease treatment and the broader plasma supply, countering the seasonal shortfall across France.
