French legal and diplomatic responses to Israeli occupation

Legal and diplomatic tensions have emerged regarding France’s role and obligations concerning Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.

In July 2026, five human rights organizations filed a legal challenge against the French government before the Conseil d’État. The plaintiffs seek to compel the state to prevent French companies and financial institutions from contributing to the occupation, arguing that France has failed to meet obligations established by the International Court of Justice’s July 2024 advisory opinion. James Goldston of the Open Society Justice Initiative stated, “The International Court of Justice left no doubt that states cannot stand on the sidelines when faced with legal obligations.”

By August 2026, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a direct condemnation of settler activity in the West Bank. Following a siege of Palestinian homes in the village of Qusra, France demanded that Israel take judicial action to arrest and prosecute those responsible, asserting that under international law, Israel has an obligation to protect the Palestinian civilian population.
