French road safety and driving license regulations

Overview

France has expanded its road safety enforcement by implementing a nationwide policy to administratively suspend driving licenses for motorists caught using handheld mobile phones. Following pilot programs, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez and Minister Marie-Pierre Vedrenne instructed prefects to apply these sanctions, which can range from 15 days to six months depending on the driver’s history. This penalty is applied in addition to a 135-euro fine and the loss of three penalty points.

In conjunction with such enforcement, drivers have the option to recover up to four points on their license by completing a two-day road safety awareness course at a prefecture-approved center. To be valid for point restoration, the training must last two consecutive days, and drivers are limited to one such voluntary course every twelve months.
