French school infrastructure and reopening developments

French educational institutions are undergoing various infrastructure improvements and reopenings ahead of the 2026-2027 academic year.

Initial efforts focused on maintenance and repairs. In Gérardmer, authorities conducted deep cleaning, masonry, and painting, alongside digital equipment updates. In the Gers department, 5.4 million euros were allocated to public middle schools, including 2 million euros for the reconstruction of Hubert Reeves College in Fleurance following a fire and subsequent flooding.

As the school year begins, several major projects are progressing. In Martinique, Robert III College has reopened to 350 students after a five-month closure caused by sargassum seaweed emissions; the return was facilitated by declining sulfur gas concentrations and coordinated cleanup efforts. For the 2026-2027 term, the school in Pontaléry has officially reopened following the evacuation caused by high concentrations of sulfurous gases. According to the ARS and the GIP sargasses, the reopening was made possible by a decrease in gas concentrations and intensive cleanup efforts, though authorities noted that “vigilance remains necessary” and monitoring systems will stay mobilized to track the situation.

Other developments include the announcement of an 8.8 million euro boarding facility at Mona Ozouf High School in Ploërmel, which has introduced a new management team and plans for a 220-capacity dormitory to be completed by 2027. Additionally, a 14-million-euro eco-friendly primary school and leisure center opened in Vannes.

Recent updates for the start of the 2026 term include the implementation of summer improvements at the Frédéric Gagliolo primary school in Bagnols-en-Forêt, such as the installation of fans to combat heat. In Argentan, the Vincent-Muselli school added a fifth class to accommodate stable student numbers, while Henri Bergson High School announced its leadership and staff structure for the new term.
