French stock market volatility persists
Overview
Late June 2026 saw the Paris bourse swing sharply, with biotech firm Abivax rebounding and defence drone maker Aerovironment rallying while service‑sector names such as Concentrix and Teleperformance fell. The next day, June 29, Abivax jumped 37.8% on positive trial data and Aerovironment rose 20% on earnings, underscoring the sector‑driven swings.
On 7 July the market split further: stocks like Vergnet, Carvolix, Axa, Amundi and Michelin reached twelve‑month highs, whereas Europlasma, Toosla, Maisons du Monde and Biophytis slid to multi‑year lows and HDF plunged almost 41%. A week later, trading volumes surged dramatically, with Nexity and Ubisoft each trading at more than four‑hundred percent above their five‑day averages, while the CAC 40 fell 1.64% amid weak corporate results, Brent crude above $100 a barrel and heightened Middle‑East tensions.
The volatility continued into August. On 5 August, large‑cap names such as Verimatrix, JCDecaux, Société Générale, Schneider Electric and Safran hit one‑year record highs, while smaller caps including Europlasma and Maisons du Monde fell to year‑low levels. The CAC 40 closed the week up 1.96% at 8,536 points, reinforcing a broader upward bias despite the persistent intra‑day swings.
By 7 August, the divergence between high and low performers persisted. While France Tourisme, Catering Intl Sces, and Schneider Electric reached annual highs, companies such as Nacon, Hopium, and Europlasma—the latter facing a near-total loss in value—hit significant annual lows.
