The 50th anniversary of the 1976 Friuli earthquake, which resulted in 990 deaths, has prompted various commemorative activities and public debates in Italy. Initial commemorations included an exhibition in Oseacco titled ‘Cantù – Resia · Operazione Amicizia – 1976-2026’, highlighting the ‘Operation Friendship’ bond between Cantù and Resia. Undersecretary for Economy and Finance Sandra Savino has praised the ‘Friuli model’ of collaboration between the state, local administrations, and volunteers as a successful chapter in Italy’s history. However, the anniversary has faced criticism regarding the nature of organized events. Some observers expressed frustration over perceived excessive spending, specifically citing the nearly 300,000 euro cost of a memorial Mass, leading to accusations of commercializing a tragic milestone. Recent activities have focused on civil protection, literature, and the arts. An interregional civil protection exercise was conducted in Gemona del Friuli to verify safety protocols, involving volunteers from Northern Italy and partners from Carinthia, Slovenia, and Istria. A new book has also been published to document community resilience, featuring texts by religious figure David Maria Turoldo. Cultural productions continue through the Ente Regionale Teatrale (ERT). The documentary ‘1976–2026 La forza dei legami’ examines how arts served as ‘social glue’ during reconstruction. The theatrical production ‘Orcolat ’76’, featuring Simone Cristicchi, toured the region in late October using the metaphor of a monster to represent the ‘earth’s cough.’ Additionally, As part of the 1976–2026 project, the FVG Orchestra Orchestra, directed by Paolo Paroni, is scheduled to perform ‘Rinascita’ concerts on November 4 and 5. These performances will take place at the Teatro Gustavo Modena in Palmanova and the Teatro Adelaide Ristori in Cividale del Friuli in early November, Friuli, featuring music composed specifically musical works by Samuel Barber and the musical ‘55 secondi’ to honor the anniversary.
