Fuel theft and tunnel activity in Hidalgo
Overview
Authorities in Hidalgo, Mexico, are conducting operations to combat illegal hydrocarbon theft through the discovery and destruction of clandestine tunnels and pipeline connections.
In late September 2026, officials began destroying a 143-meter-long tunnel in Teocalco, which was identified as the longest in the state. This structure connected a storage warehouse to the Tula-Tuxpan pipeline and ran beneath railway tracks and major roads. To prevent collapse, the tunnel is being filled with fluid concrete and railway sleeper material.
During the same period, security operations led by Governor Julio Menchaca Salazar uncovered a 30-meter tunnel in the Atitalaquia region. This operation resulted in the seizure of 20,900 liters of fuel, high-pressure hoses, and large containers. Additionally, officials located and closed five clandestine connections on the Tula-Salamanca pipeline in the Tula-Tepeji region.
