G20Spiagge summit on Italian coastal management

The IX Destination Summit of the G20Spiagge, held in Lignano Sabbiadoro, convened representatives from major Italian coastal municipalities to address tourism management and environmental sustainability. A primary objective of the summit was to advocate for a legislative framework to establish ‘Marine Communities,’ which would provide coastal towns with increased administrative and financial autonomy to manage seasonal population surges and infrastructure needs.

Representing a network of 26 municipalities that host approximately 55 million annual visitors—roughly 12% of Italy’s total tourism—delegates from cities such as Sorrento and Alghero argued that current administrative tools are insufficient for territories facing massive summer population surges. They are calling for greater financial and managerial autonomy to oversee services, security, and infrastructure.

Discussions focused on mitigating the effects of climate change, managing overcrowding, and protecting fragile ecosystems. While some municipalities, such as Riccione, highlighted successful models for integrating international clubbing and the meeting industry, participants also emphasized the need to transition toward high-end tourism markets and improve the quality of life for permanent residents. Concerns remain regarding structural deficiencies, including inadequate sewage systems, insufficient technological networks, and the need for better solutions to combat coastal erosion.
