Overview
In late July 2026 the Galician government and its three public universities agreed to overhaul the university entrance test (PAU). The new framework introduces joint working groups of secondary‑school teachers and university professors, an organising commission to set criteria and create question banks, and a technical commission to manage logistics and accommodations. The changes are to be phased in, with some measures applied to the next exam call and further adjustments planned for subsequent years.
A week later, the region reported the outcomes of a separate education recruitment exam. Of the 1,054 candidates who passed, 69 % were women, highlighting a strong gender skew among new hires. Only about two‑thirds of the 1,601 advertised teaching posts were filled, leaving 547 vacancies. Top scorers were identified, underscoring the competitive nature of the selection process. Together, the reforms and the hiring results illustrate Galicia’s ongoing efforts to improve transparency, equity, and effectiveness in its education assessment and staffing systems.
