Senegal political split deepens amid election delays

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko in late May 2026 triggered a parliamentary crisis and a constitutional amendment barring a sitting president from heading a party. After Sonko, now speaker of the National Assembly, pushed the amendment forward, Faye unveiled the Kiiraay – Les Patriotes Républicains party in late July 2026. Kiiraay was presented as a youth-, women-, and diaspora-focused vehicle, and ministers were asked to declare their affiliation. In late July, controversy arose when some Kiiraay members advocated for extending the presidential term from five to seven years. Despite an ‘eternity clause’ in the 2016 constitution intended to prevent such changes, the proposal faced intense backlash from civil society and jurists, who described it as a ‘malicious debate.’ As the rift between Faye and Sonko deepened, Sonko publicly criticized the administration’s management in Linguère, stating that political reality had diverged from the aspirations of the people. In response to political pressure, President Faye postponed the 2027 local elections on 6 August. ~~Meanwhile,~~ Kiiraay has ~~initiated a strategic roadmap to establish grassroots cells across neighborhoods and villages, gaining momentum through local allegiances such as the Ziguinchor Rek movement. The party’s~~ since aggressively expanded its territorial ~~expansion has seen significant gains, including~~ footprint. In the ~~joining~~ Linguère department, Mayor Birame Ba of ~~eight~~ Kamb joined the party on 15 August, following a trend where 14 of ~~twelve~~ 19 mayors in the ~~Bakel~~ department had already joined in July. The party also consolidated influence in the Bakel department, with eight of twelve mayors joining, and ~~new cells~~ strengthened its presence in the Thiès ~~region. On 17 August, Minister of Industry~~ region through new cells and ~~Commerce Serigne Guèye Diop announced that President Faye intends to dissolve~~ the ~~National Assembly on 2 December to secure a more cooperative majority, accusing certain deputies~~ defection of ‘sabotaging’ the President’s actions. While rumors suggested mass defections from the Pastef parliamentary group, investigations indicated only one deputy, Félicité Mbougane Sarr, has switched sides, leaving Tivaouane Mayor Demba Diop.
