The Garifuna community in Honduras has moved from receiving state recognition to engaging in intense conflict with the government over land rights. Initially, the Honduran administration participated in ceremonies to honor over 100 Garifuna women for their contributions to various sectors, including health, education, and culture. However, tensions have since escalated as Garifuna leaders, including Miriam Miranda of the Organización Fraternal Negra Hondureña (Ofraneh), have accused the state of a ‘plan of dispossession and cultural genocide.’ Conflict has recently intensified in Cayos Cochinos. Following a court order labeling them ‘unauthorized occupants,’ the community faced police evictions. The dispute centers on the filming of the reality show ‘Supervivientes: All Stars’ on Uva de Cayos beach, a site owned by the Sociedad de Inversiones Ecológicas, a consortium in which Mexican businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego is a majority shareholder through Fundación Azteca Honduras. Local residents and Ofraneh report that the production has disrupted fishing, water access, and turtle nesting. In response to the protests and displacement, the production company Mediaset moved contestants to a more inhospitable location in Laguna Cacao. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the situation, stating the treatment of the Garífuna people is ‘not right’ and emphasizing that economic activity in indigenous territories must adhere to legal regulations. In Tegucigalpa, protesters have established the ‘Campamento por la Vida del Pueblo Garífuna,’ also known as ‘Campamento Viva Berta,’ to protest extractivism and defend ancestral territories. The camp serves as a site for organized resistance, with protesters demanding the release of five territory defenders detained during the eviction of the San Juan community and calling for government compliance with four Inter-American Court of Human Rights rulings. Controversies regarding land ownership and state sovereignty are intensifying.
