Later that month, an online commenter claiming to be Garry’s brother disputed Garry’s earlier accounts of a unsupportive family, insisting the family was middle‑class, that their parents funded his boxing and education, and that Garry had missed his grandfather’s funeral. The claim surfaced on a YouTube comment thread linked to a High Performance podcast interview and remained unverified, adding a personal distraction to Garry’s preparation.

On 24 July the same family‑dispute narrative resurfaced, with the alleged brother reiterating the challenges to Garry’s story and again questioning his family dynamics.

Five days later, former heavyweight Brendan Schaub publicly criticised Garry’s media appearances, labeling his recent interviews the "worst" in the sport and urging him to "shut up and fight." Schaub also attacked Garry’s remarks on family and gender roles, suggesting the fighter was overly influenced by his girlfriend and that the controversy was harming his reputation ahead of the title bout.
