The Gaza Strip is experiencing a significant expansion of illicit trade networks and critical shortages of essential goods due to Israeli restrictions. Many items are being blocked under ‘dual-use’ classifications, leading to a booming black market for electronics, fuel, and medical supplies. This scarcity has escalated into a sectoral crisis, particularly within the transportation sector.

Anwar Abu Elba, head of the Bus Owners Syndicate, has warned of an imminent and total collapse of public transportation. Approximately 70% of the total bus fleet is currently out of service, with the remaining 30% reportedly decreasing by an estimated 2% to 3% daily. This decline is driven by the paralysis of essential supplies—such as tires, oils, and spare parts—and the widespread destruction of roads, which forces vehicles to navigate rubble and accelerates wear and tear. To maintain minimal service, companies have resorted to ‘forced dismantling,’ taking parts from broken buses to repair others.

The crisis is severely impacting the education and medical sectors. While over 450 large buses previously operated, only 50 to 60 remain to serve students. Consequently, buses designed for 50 passengers are often carrying between 85 and 90 people. Furthermore, medical staff and service workers face extreme overcrowding and have been forced to extend shifts from 8 to 12 hours due to the inability to travel safely at night.

Beyond economic loss, the blockade of mechanical supplies threatens critical infrastructure, including water desalination plants, sewage pumps, and emergency services. Local economic leaders and international organizations continue to address this survival crisis, noting that restrictive import mechanisms limit competition and further increase costs.
