Gender-based violence in Dominican Republic
Overview
In late 2026, reports emerged regarding an increase in feminicides in the Dominican Republic. The Fundación Vida Sin Violencia reported 74 cases for the year, which represents an increase of 24 cases compared to the previous year. President Yanira Fondeur noted that many victims were under the age of 35 and highlighted that these crimes have left 105 children and adolescents without mothers.
In response to these trends, Mirelys Uceta, the Secretary of Women for the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC), criticized the effectiveness of state protection mechanisms. Uceta attributed the persistence of violence against women and girls to deficiencies in public policy and a lack of female representation in decision-making processes. The PRSC has indicated it is studying the root causes of gender-based violence to develop proposals for strengthening institutional protection and preventing further femicides.
