Gender empowerment and governance initiatives in Africa
Overview
Various initiatives have been launched across several African nations to promote gender equality, women’s leadership, and improved governance.
In Liberia, UN Women introduced the Gender Promotion Initiative 2.0, a three-year, US$3 million program designed to strengthen women’s leadership and inclusive peacebuilding. A significant portion of these funds is designated for Women’s Rights Organizations to support advocacy and conflict prevention. Concurrently, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, consultations were held in Kinshasa to increase the participation of women and youth in natural resource governance to mitigate the link between resource exploitation and insecurity.
In Chad, the Ministry of Women and Early Childhood, supported by the World Bank, conducted workshops to train service providers on handling gender-based violence and navigating legal and medical referral mechanisms. Meanwhile, in Togo, the Dezon Project provided training to women in the Zio 2 and Avé 2 communes to enhance their leadership skills and understanding of local governance and family law.
