Gender representation in North Macedonian leadership
Overview
In mid-September 2026, North Macedonia’s Minister of Defense, Vlado Misajlovski, announced that women comprise over 50% of the leadership staff within the Ministry of Defense. He described women as a “vital link in the functioning of the institution” and noted their high representation as a point of pride for the ministry.
However, a subsequent report by the State Audit Office (DZR) highlighted a broader gender gap in leadership across the country’s central government. While women make up 57.5% of the total public sector workforce, their presence diminishes at higher decision-making levels. The audit noted that in the 2024–2028 government, women hold only 15% of ministerial positions and none of the five deputy presidency roles. Additionally, while female participation in the Assembly reached 39.2% in 2024, the report observed that no woman has been elected President of the Assembly since 1991.
