Generational shift in travel preferences and sustainability
Overview
A July 2026 Greek travel survey highlighted how Millennials now dominate global travel demand, seeking flexibility, personalization, digital convenience and immersive experiences, often blending work with leisure. Gen Z treats vacations as a lifestyle, favoring micro-experiences such as premium food outings and prioritizing spending on experiences over larger trips. Older travelers (Gen X and Boomers) continue to value comfort, high-level service, wellness and easy navigation.
A few days later, a design and travel trend report connected these generational preferences to a broader move toward emotionally resonant outdoor spaces and natural-landscape destinations. Designer Meeshie Fahmy advocated a “feeling-first” approach to outdoor environments, while travel data showed Gen Z and Millennials prioritizing digital detoxes and immersive experiences in places like Santorini’s volcanic beaches, the Swiss Alps and Italy’s Cinque Terre.
By August 2026, trends further evolved toward relaxation and localized sustainability. A KAYAK report found that 70 percent of Gen Z and Millennial travelers prioritize relaxation and mental resets, with nearly half favoring a slower pace to clear the mind. Recommended destinations for this “slow travel” include the Lofoten islands, the Albanian Riviera, the Azores, the San Juan Islands, and Kangaroo Island.
Additionally, research in Germany suggests a shift from avoiding travel to practicing sustainable actions at destinations. While only 32 percent of respondents avoid air travel to reduce CO2 emissions, 54 percent prioritize buying local products and 59 percent seek locally owned businesses. Younger generations and women demonstrate a higher orientation toward these sustainability trends.
