Georgia-Iran diplomatic dispute

Overview

A diplomatic dispute emerged between Georgia and Iran following controversial social media remarks by the Iranian Ambassador, Seyed Ali Moujani. The ambassador, a historian, posted an image of the Georgian queen-regent, Queen Ketevan, projected onto the Iranian embassy facade, suggesting her history involves “numerous conflicting accounts” and stating intentions to publish his own research.

Queen Ketevan is a canonized martyr of the Georgian Orthodox Church who was executed in Shiraz in 1624. The remarks drew criticism from Georgian historians, religious figures, and members of the ruling Georgian Dream party, who viewed the comments as an interference in domestic affairs.

In response, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the ambassador, with Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandre Khvtisiashvili stating the remarks “went beyond the bounds of diplomatic activity” and could negatively impact public attitudes. The Ministry emphasized that diplomatic representatives must refrain from interpreting the host country’s history and domestic affairs.
