Georgia state fuel tax suspension and diesel relief
Overview
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency and issued an executive order to temporarily suspend the state’s motor fuel excise tax. The suspension, running from late September through October 29, aims to provide relief to residents and businesses amid rising fuel costs and global market instability.
The order reduces gasoline prices by 33.3 cents per gallon and diesel by 37.3 cents per gallon. Additionally, the state has temporarily lifted weight restrictions on commercial transport vehicles to lower delivery costs for retailers and the agricultural sector. Officials noted that price reductions at the pump may not be immediate because the tax is collected at the distributor level.
On October 7, Governor Kemp amended the state of emergency order to extend the relief period through November 5. This extension maintains the fuel tax suspension and the removal of state weight limits on commercial vehicles. To further assist farmers and truckers, the Governor waived penalties for the on-road use of dyed diesel, a fuel typically reserved for off-road machinery. This move follows a federal authorization by President Donald Trump to allow highway use of dyed diesel and defer federal excise taxes to combat record-high diesel prices.
Following the initial tax suspension, Georgia has seen average gas prices decrease by approximately 33 cents and diesel by more than 42 cents per gallon.
