German athletes' European competition success

In late July, German sport authorities in Bottrop approved funding for 49 young athletes for the 2026/27 season, supporting rower Johannes Benien, a U23 world champion, and cyclist Gianna Schmieder, who placed fifth in the inaugural women’s European Steher race. The programme covered travel, training camps, health services and specialised equipment, highlighting Germany’s dual‑career approach that lets elite athletes combine sport with education.

A week later, German competitors continued to excel. Synchronized swimmer Klara Bleyer earned silver and bronze medals at the European Championships in Paris, while veteran triathletes Ina and Christoph Ketzer dominated the 38th Sassenberg Triathlon in Germany. Bleyer’s achievements underscored the ongoing need for personal funding despite federation support.
