German Autobahn bridge demolition program

In July 2026 the Autobahn GmbH began a scheduled demolition of the Talbrücke Ottfingen on the A45, using explosives to bring down the first half of the bridge while rerouting traffic over the remaining half. The collapse was timed for the morning rush and the road was expected to reopen around midday, part of a broader renewal effort that has already seen dozens of aging bridges across the Dortmund‑Frankfurt corridor replaced or slated for replacement.

By early August the same agency accelerated work on a different structure, the overpass "21Ü2" on the A14 near Grimma. After a full closure and preparatory removal of asphalt and drainage, demolition hammers and cutters dismantled the bridge deck and supporting pillars. Debris was cleared to a temporary site and, ahead of the original schedule, the highway was set to reopen on Sunday. The swift progress underscores the program’s aim to modernise key north‑south routes while minimizing disruption for motorists.

Both events illustrate the ongoing, coordinated effort to replace ageing German Autobahn bridges, with traffic management and accelerated timelines becoming hallmarks of the renewal strategy.
