German banking sector cryptocurrency integration
Overview
The German banking sector has begun integrating cryptocurrency trading services into mobile applications. The Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe initiated a phased rollout of its ‘Krypto – powered by Deka’ service, which offers assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Solana, and Polygon. This rollout is decentralized, allowing individual Sparkassen to activate the feature at their own discretion, with a goal to connect a large portion of interested institutions by the first half of 2027.
Following this trend, Raiffeisenbank Schwaben Mitte in Bavaria became one of the first cooperative banks to offer digital asset trading after receiving approval from the regulatory authority BaFin. Customers at this institution can access a crypto depot via the bank’s mobile app, reflecting a broader movement among German financial institutions to expand digital offerings in response to competition from neobanks.
