The shortlist for the 2026 German Book Prize has been announced, featuring six authors: Shida Bazyar for ‘Die Lücken’, Franziska Gänsler for ‘Orca’, Valeria Gordeev for ‘Die Zikade entschlüpft ihrer goldglänzenden Hülle’, Elias Hirschl for ‘Schleifen’, Peggy Mädler for ‘Selbstregulierung des Herzens’, and Dana Vowinckel for ‘Anton und Alma’. The jury evaluated 205 titles published between autumn 2025 and early September 2026. The selected works address diverse themes, including the history of the GDR, the impact of climate change, and personal relationships set against the backdrop of the Gaza war. Additional themes noted include historical narratives involving the Nazi era and Jewish families. Jury spokesperson Cornelia Geißler noted that the shortlist reflects how the uncertainties of the present serve as “fertile ground for great literature.” The winner is scheduled to be revealed on October 5, one day before the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The prize fund totals 37,500 euros, with 25,000 euros awarded to the winner and 2,500 euros to each of the other shortlisted authors.
