Germany's 2026 cherry harvest reached approximately 48,500 tons of sweet and sour cherries, according to final estimates from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This total is 7.8 percent higher than the average of the previous ten years (2016-2025) and represents a 3.0 percent increase over the previous year. Sweet cherries comprised the majority of the harvest at 38,900 tons (80.2 percent), which is 16.2 percent above the ten-year average. Sour cherries accounted for 9,600 tons (19.8 percent). While sweet cherry yields were strong, sour cherry cultivation has seen a decline, with its cultivation area shrinking by 25.8 percent over the last decade. The sour cherry harvest specifically fell 16.8 percent below the 2016–2025 average. Regional results varied significantly. Baden-Württemberg, the largest producer of sweet cherries, saw a harvest of 19,100 tons, exceeding its ten-year average by 16.7 percent. Niedersachsen also reported a high yield, with 6,700 tons representing a 66 percent increase over its ten-year average. Conversely, Rheinland-Pfalz recorded 2,000 tons, which is 37.2 percent below its ten-year average. Key factors contributing to the high yields included mild spring temperatures and reduced frost damage, even though some regions faced summer heat and drought. Additionally, preliminary estimates suggest a strong pear harvest of approximately 40,900 tons, roughly 7.7 percent above the ten-year average.
