Germany is experiencing a significant expansion in its defense technology and startup sectors, largely fueled by increased military spending and advancements in artificial intelligence. In Munich, a new hub for defense technology is emerging. This growth is supported by a 2026 federal budget allocating approximately €82.7 billion to defense, which, when combined with a special modernization fund, brings total spending to roughly €108 billion. This represents a 24% year-on-year increase and marks the first time since 1990 that German military spending has exceeded 2% of its GDP. Companies such as Quantum Systems, Helsing, and Tytan Technologies are central to this regional development. This momentum extends to the broader German startup ecosystem. By late September 2026, venture capital inflows reached approximately eight billion euros, surpassing the previous year’s total. This has resulted in a record 39 unicorns in Germany, with 53 percent of surveyed growth companies centering their products around AI. New unicorns joining established names like Trade Republic, N26, and Personio include Osapiens, Neura Robotics, and Stark Defense.
