German deportation policy protests and implementation
Overview
In late October 2026, coordinated protests occurred at several German airports, including Frankfurt, Munich, and Leipzig/Halle, as demonstrators opposed government deportation policies and the expansion of deportation infrastructure. In Leipzig, protesters specifically targeted charter flights to Afghanistan, criticizing the government’s cooperation with the Taliban. In Frankfurt and Munich, demonstrators argued against the construction of dedicated deportation terminals, suggesting funds should be redirected toward refugee integration.
Following these protests, the German government increased deportations to Afghanistan, including a charter flight transporting 40 Afghan men to Kabul. The Ministry of the Interior reported that those deported were convicted of serious crimes, such as drug trafficking and sexual offenses. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized the return of criminals as a “consistent and reliable part of migration policy.”
This operation, which involved transferring many individuals directly from custody, is part of a broader strategy involving cooperation with the Taliban regime to facilitate regular repatriations. While Germany does not recognize the Taliban as a legitimate government, an agreement has been established to enable these flights; in exchange, the Taliban have reportedly requested an increase in the number of diplomats stationed in Germany. This latest flight follows previous deportations of 30 individuals in June, 31 in July, and 23 in August.
Concurrently, concerns were raised regarding approximately 148 Afghan women in Pakistan who are awaiting residency approvals for Germany. Despite having passed security screenings, some of these women, including journalists and social workers, face the threat of deportation to Afghanistan, where they risk persecution or forced marriage. Some have reportedly faced sudden revocations of residency commitments.
