German film festivals and programming
Overview
Several film festivals in Germany have announced their upcoming schedules for late 2026, highlighting diverse themes and technological advancements.
The 36th Cottbus Film Festival is set for November 3 to 8, featuring over 140 films. It will host the first fully AI-generated feature film, ‘A WOMAN ASLEEP’, in its main competition. Meanwhile, the 36th Cologne Film Festival, running from October 29 to November 5, includes Volkan Üce’s documentary ‘2M2’ in its competition for the Filmpreis NRW award.
Other regional events focus on social perspectives and youth engagement. In Mannheim, a “Film your future” workshop involving 15 youths produced a short film exploring political anxieties and personal freedoms, which will be shown at the International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg on November 15. Additionally, the 25th FILMZ festival in Mainz, scheduled for November 2 to 15, will open with “Drei Kameradinnen”, a film addressing migration and prejudice.
