German food safety inspection concerns
Overview
The Federal Association of Food Chemists in the Public Service has raised alarms regarding potential gaps in food safety inspections throughout Germany. During a meeting in Potsdam, association president Birgit Bienzle warned that removing specific risk assessment and sampling guidelines could compromise inspection quality and quantity. She cautioned that consumer protection standards should not be lowered due to local budget constraints.
Following these warnings, data from the Berlin Senate Department for Justice and Consumer Protection indicated a significant rise in violations within the capital. In 2025, authorities identified 16,982 violations across 17,251 inspected businesses, representing a 28 percent increase from the previous year. While the total number of inspections grew by 6.2 percent, approximately 30 percent of the inspected establishments were found to be in breach of regulations.
