The German trade union IG Metall has entered a period of heightened tension with employers regarding labor rights and wage negotiations. Employers argued that limiting works council rights is necessary to accelerate corporate decision-making, while IG Metall co-determination executive André Arenz maintained that works councils are essential for protecting employee health and preventing unilateral management decisions. While 47.8% of surveyed employees favor moderate wage increases, 35% advocate for significant raises. Beyond wages, the union is seeking to secure real wages and is demanding company concessions, such as guaranteed investments and job security, to counter concerns regarding deindustrialization and unfair competition. Benner has called for anti-dumping strategies and local-content requirements to protect jobs, while also stating the union is prepared to defend the 35-hour work week against potential corporate challenges.
