German lake fish die-offs due to heat

Overview

Extreme heat and drought conditions in Germany have led to multiple instances of oxygen depletion in lakes, resulting in mass fish die-offs and emergency rescue operations.

In early August, incidents were reported in Isselburg at Werther See and in Upper Bavaria at Sylvansteinsee. In Isselburg, a sudden temperature rise caused severe oxygen depletion, prompting the installation of a permanent water-aeration unit to protect the ecosystem from future heat-related stress. In Bavaria, fishing associations worked to relocate pike from shallow, oxygen-poor zones created by drought.

By mid-August, a similar emergency occurred at Lake Schwanenteich in Giessen. Firefighters and water services conducted a nighttime operation to circulate and aerate approximately 5,000 cubic meters of water. This intervention successfully lowered the water temperature by roughly two degrees Celsius and increased oxygen concentrations to provide viable survival conditions for the fish.
