Overview

The German Navy conducted successful tests of the Israeli-developed Lora (Long-Range Artillery Weapon System) ballistic missile in the North Atlantic, specifically in the waters between Ireland and Iceland. The trials involved the F125-class frigate Sachsen-Anhalt and demonstrated the system’s ability to strike targets with high precision using GPS and inertial navigation.

While the German Ministry of Defense indicates a range of approximately 500 km, manufacturer Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) cites a range between 90 and 430 km. Navy Inspector Jan Christian Kaack described the successful launch as a “historic milestone” that provides a potential range exceeding any previously operated by the force.

The testing, which was kept secret until completion, is viewed as part of Germany’s broader defense programs to increase striking power and naval deterrence. NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum suggested the secrecy was a deliberate signal regarding Europe’s developing long-range strike capabilities and increased responsibility in regional deterrence.
