German pharmaceutical supply and pharmacy availability

Overview

In mid-October 2026, the Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists (ABDA) reported that supplies of seasonal flu remedies, fever syrups, and antibiotics were secured for the upcoming winter. However, the organization noted that structural shortages persisted for over 500 other medications, requiring pharmacists to spend significant weekly hours managing alternatives and consulting with doctors.

By late October, broader data revealed the scale of the issue, noting that in 2025, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) recorded over 1,500 reports regarding 1,041 supply bottlenecks. Psychotropic drugs, specifically antipsychotics, faced prolonged shortages averaging 230 days, while shortages in antibiotics and lipid-lowering agents potentially affected more than four million patients. The Central Institute for Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (Zi) attributed these shortages to a high concentration of production in China and India.

Additionally, the German pharmacy landscape is undergoing structural changes. In Bavaria, approximately 800 pharmacies have closed over the last fifteen years. To address these closures and manage emergency services, authorities are utilizing artificial intelligence to maintain medication access within a 20 to 25 kilometer radius for residents.
