German police highway pursuits

Entities: German police · masked e‑scooter rider (Bitburg) · Horb am Neckar · motorcycle riders (Wispertal) · A6 highway

Overview

In late July 2026 German law‑enforcement agencies conducted two high‑profile highway chases involving reckless, possibly intoxicated drivers. On 23 July, officers attempted to stop a vehicle with foreign plates near Greding, Bavaria. The driver evaded, weaving onto the A6 and prompting a multi‑state pursuit. At a Schnelldorf interchange the driver accelerated toward an officer, who fired a shot in self‑defence, striking the car and leading to the driver’s arrest without injury.

A week later, on 30 July, a 38‑year‑old driver with a blood‑alcohol level of about 2.5 ‰ created a dangerous situation on the A81 near Horb am Neckar, Baden‑Württemberg. After reckless overtaking and ignoring police signals, the driver fled in a serpentine pattern across multiple lanes, forcing police to chase him for over an hour over roughly 80 km. The pursuit spanned the A81, the Leonberg interchange, and the A6 toward Nürnberg, temporarily closing the A6 to traffic. The driver ultimately stopped, was taken into provisional custody, and transferred to a psychiatric facility for a presumed mental‑health crisis.

The July 30 chase was reported alongside unrelated e‑scooter hit‑and‑run and motorcycle safety checks, underscoring the range of incidents German police handled that week. Both highway pursuits illustrate the challenges of high‑speed chases on major motorways, involving dangerous driving behaviour, cross‑state coordination, and decisions about use of force and public safety.
