German public transit digital service developments

German regional transit operators have introduced various digital tools to enhance passenger services and communication. In late July 2026, the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN) upgraded its mobility app to include real-time tracking for buses and trams, while Magdeburg’s MVB released a beta app integrating ticketing and service notices.

By mid-August 2026, the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) expanded digital engagement through a WhatsApp pilot program at the Kottbusser Tor U-Bahn station. This initiative allows passengers to report vandalism, graffiti, and cleanliness issues directly via WhatsApp, aiming to improve response times for maintenance crews using QR codes or a dedicated number.

During this same period, the BVG encountered legal complexities regarding the ‘FreiFahren’ app, which provides real-time notifications to passengers about ongoing ticket inspections. Legal expert Christian Solmecke noted that, unlike prohibited speed camera warning apps for drivers, there is currently no legal basis in public transit to ban such information. As long as the app shares truthful information and does not actively encourage fare evasion, it is protected under freedom of expression. The BVG appears to have limited legal recourse to force the removal of these warnings, particularly as the app is operated by an association rather than a commercial entity.
