German regional film festivals

Regional film festivals in Germany have held various screenings and events. The 15th Taunus-Filmfest Taunale in Oberursel featured documentaries and short films, including works related to the war in Ukraine and Russia. Simultaneously, the 5th Eichsfelder Filmfestival in Heiligenstadt showcased 41 films from 18 countries, including Iranian shorts and horror-themed premieres.

In Ludwigshafen, the 22nd Festival des deutschen Films has commenced. Recognized as the most visited German film festival after the Berlinale, with over 135,000 visitors recorded last year, the event serves as a major industry hub and idea exchange. The festival features 74 productions, including children’s films, and takes place in outdoor cinemas and film tents on the Parkinsel in the Rhine.

The festival opened with the comedy ‘Plötzlich Schwiegervater’ by Till Endemann. Thirteen films are competing for the Filmkunstpreis, while the audience will select the Rheingold-Preis. Notable honorees include director Volker Schlöndorff, who will receive a lifetime achievement award, alongside actor Uwe Ochsenknecht and actress Leslie Malton. Acting awards are slated for Annette Frier, Christian Berkel, and Christian Redl.

Running until September 6, the festival has seen attendance from political leaders, including Minister-President Gordon Schnieder and Culture Minister Sven Teuber. Schnieder emphasized the role of culture as a “unifying force in society.”
