German Sparkasse safe-deposit box robberies
Overview
At the end of 2025, a massive robbery at a Sparkasse branch in Gelsenkirchen breached more than 3,000 safe-deposit boxes. Perpetrators drilled through an archive room wall to access the vault, an incident described as a possible “century-coup”. While initial damage estimates were around €30 million, subsequent reports suggest total damages could reach hundreds of millions of euros.
In response to the Gelsenkirchen heist, a special investigation team of over 300 officers has interviewed roughly 1,500 victims. Following orders from the Essen public prosecutor, police began executing forced visits on 3 August 2026 to question approximately 30 owners who had ignored previous interview notices. Authorities continue to probe whether the thieves utilized insider knowledge to access the vault.
Legal repercussions for the Gelsenkirchen incident are mounting. Eighteen lawsuits have been filed by customers seeking full compensation for stolen valuables, alleging security deficiencies at the bank. While contractual terms typically limit reimbursement to €10,300 per box, plaintiffs are seeking full coverage. Attorney Daniel Kuhlmann, representing several hundred claimants, has criticized the bank, stating that insurance payouts have not been effectively distributed. Civil proceedings at the Essen Regional Court were previously suspended while an expert is appointed to investigate the bank’s security protocols; the next court date is scheduled for 10 September.
Separately, on 28 July 2026, thieves forced open approximately 30 deposit boxes in the vault of a Sparkasse in Mönchengladbach while the bank was open to customers. The perpetrators fled after about thirty minutes; no arrests have been made.
