German waterway restoration and infrastructure projects

Various waterway restoration and infrastructure projects are progressing across different regions in Germany.

In the Ems and Emscher regions, efforts have focused on embankment stabilization and river renaturation. This includes securing 530 meters of the southern Ems embankment with sandstone riprap and relocating a 1.1-kilometer stretch of the Grotenbach to allow for natural development. Concurrently, the Witten-Annen-Kanal is undergoing sanitation to manage rainwater and industrial wastewater.

In Leipzig, a long-term water engineering project involving the Elstermühlgraben has reached completion. After approximately 25 years of development, the final 180-meter stretch was opened, concluding a process to uncover waterways that had been placed in underground pipes. The project, which cost over six million euros, has created a new waterway between the city center and the Weiße Elster river, potentially allowing for a water route extending toward Halle.

This final phase included the construction of seven new bridges and the restoration of the Poniatowski Monument. The monument was unveiled during a ceremony attended by Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung and Saxon Minister for Economic Affairs Dirk Panter. The project is intended to support climate adaptation, flood protection, and local water tourism.
