Germany-Algeria green hydrogen cooperation

Overview

Germany and Algeria are strengthening cooperation regarding the energy transition, specifically focusing on green hydrogen and the SoutH2 corridor project designed to connect North African production to European markets.

In late August 2026, a German business delegation organized by the German-Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Energy Watcher prepared to visit Algeria. This mission aims to explore technical collaborations in electrolysis, energy storage, water desalination, and pipeline rehabilitation.

Algeria is actively positioning itself as a strategic partner for European investors by leveraging its solar and wind resources. Following a green hydrogen production strategy adopted in March 2023, the state-owned group Sonatrach intends to develop the sector through pilot electrolysis plants and a 50 MW reference installation by 2030. The Algerian ministry is also working to establish a legal framework for the production and transport of green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as e-methanol and green ammonia.
